What do you do when you're stuck on an ostrich chasing a lion while being chased by a seahorse?? ….Get your drunk ass off that carousel!
When I moved to the Twin Cities I was looking for opportunities to work, specifically in comedy. I was sad to discover no one was producing the kind of work I wanted to perform. Improv, sketch, and theatre communities were separated and I wanted to find a home with all three venues. Enter Catherine Hansen. She brought the founding members together with a goal of producing one monthly installment of a show that would be funny and female driven. We all put our heads together that afternoon and Smartmouth was born. It's been over three years and one hundred performances and my heart still swells when I stop to think about what we've created. I love this community, I love this work, I love the sound of our audience' laughter, and I will never stop pushing to create opportunities for women in comedy. Smartmouth is my home.
Kelliann Kary is a founding producer of Smartmouth Comedy. She graduated from the Peck School of the Arts with a BFA in Acting in 2012 and moved to the Twin Cities shortly after. Though her degree is in performance Kary is an established playwright, director, and producer in the Twin Cities. Her favorite projects include co-writing and directing Smartmouth's first full length play and sell out hit, Who Killed Ariel?: A Princess Murder Mystery and writing/directing Christmas with the Campbells, a piece inspired by her family. Kary's main focus and artistic drive is the art of making people laugh and the intense, never-ending desire to create more opportunities for women in comedy.
